ICMP:

The Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) is one of the core protocols of the internet protocol suite. It is chiefly used by networked computer's operating systems to send error messages indicating, for instance, that a requested service is not available or that a host or router could not be reached.
ICMP differs in purpose from TCP and UDP in that it is usually not used directly by user network applications. One exception is the ping tool, which sends ICMP Echo Request messages (and receives Echo Response messages) to determine whether a host is reachable and how long packets take to get to and from that host.
The version of ICMP for internet protocol version 4 is also known as ICMPv4, ast it is part of IPv4. IPv6 has an equivalent protocol.
ICMP messages are constructed at the IP layer, usually from a normal IP data-gram which has generated an ICMP response. IP encapsulates the appropriate ICMP message with a new IP header (to get the ICMP message back to the original sending host), and transmits the resulting data-gram in the usual manner.


TCP:

TCP is a complex full duplex protocol that provides connection oriented, reliable, byte stream service to the application layer. TCP includes a flow control mechanism for each of the byte stream it receives from the application layer. TCP uses its built in messaging mechanisms to ensure the application data makes it to the destination device. TCP also implements a congestion control mechanism: In spite of being widely used, TCP is still in the development phase. Periodically, enhancements are being made in TCP to ensure better QoS.


UDP:

UDP is a connectionless and unreliable transport layer protocol. The UDP protocol is extremely simplistic in nature. Data from the application layer is handed down to the transport layer and encapsulated in a UDP data-gram. The data-gram is sent to the host with no mechanisms to guarantee the safe arrival on the destination device. This checking is pushed back up to the application layer if reliability is desired.
The primary distinction between TCP and UDP lies in how each protocol behaves. Of the two protocols, TCP deserves special attention. An in depth discussion on TCP is beyond the scope of this book. We will cover only some essential aspects.
