What is Multiple Access of a Satellite?

Multiple Access is defined as the ability of earth stations to interconnect their respective communication links through a common satellite. Multiple access is a form of multiplexing in which a large number of earth stations form simultaneous links with the satellite through one or more radio frequency channels. There are three commonly used multiple access schemes:

  1. Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA): It is the simplest and most widely used multiple access techniques since the commencement of satellite communication. Here's each earth station transmits at different frequencies separated by a guard band. One earth station occupies the allotted frequency at all times, whether or not it is transmitting.

  2. Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA): Here the entire transponder bandwidth is available to all stations. Each earth station transmits in its time slot.

  3. Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA): This method was initially restricted to military applications because of its cost and complexity. Here, all carriers access the transponder at the same time and occupy the full bandwidth. Each carrier is however modulated by a different code word by virtue of which it is segregated.
